Walmart shop

Walmart has stores in 50 states and Puerto Rico that offer low prices on the widest variety of products through various formats including Supercenter, Discount Store, and Neighborhood Markets.

Walmart Supercenter

Walmart began building Supercenters in 1988 and around 182,000 square feet employs around 300 employees. Walmart Supercenters evaluates the best deals in a one-stop shopping experience by combining a grocery store with bakeries, fresh produce, food and dairy products with clothing, electronic goods, toys and home furniture. Most Walmart Supercenters are always open 24 hours, and may also include specialized stores such as hair and nail salons, banks, restaurants or vision centers.

Walmart Discount Store

Since Sam Walton opened his first discount store in Rogers, Ark., In 1962, we have built hundreds in the US. Smaller than the Supercenter, discount stores employ around 200 partners and offer electronics, clothing, toys, home furnishings, health and beauty. help, hardware and more around 106,000 square feet of bright open space.

Walmart Environmental Market

Walmart Neighborhood Markets was designed in 1998 as a smaller footprint option for people who need affordable pharmacies, groceries and merchandise. Each is around 38,000 square feet and employs up to 95 employees. Walmart Neighborhood Markets offers fresh produce, meat and dairy products, bakeries and deli foods, household appliances, health and beauty aids, and pharmacies.

Distribution Center

150+ Walmart distribution centers are the center of activity for our business. Our distribution operation is one of the largest in the world serving shops, clubs and direct delivery to customers. Transportation Walmart has a fleet of 6,100 tractors, 61,000 trailers and more than 7,800 drivers.
  • The distribution center network sends general goods, dry food ingredients, fast-damaged food ingredients, along with other special categories to our customers every day.
  • There are 6 disaster distribution centers, strategically located throughout the country and filled to provide rapid response to people who are struggling in the event of a natural disaster.
  • Each distribution center is more than 1 million square feet and employs 600+ personnel who unload and send more than 200 trailers every day.
  • Each distribution center supports 90 to 100 stores within a radius of 150+ miles.

Walmart's Fleet

Walmart can move goods to and from distribution centers because we maintain a private truck fleet and skilled staff of truck drivers. We think our driver team is the best in the world. They are part of one of the largest and safest fleets, and every year they drive 700 million miles to generate millions of shipments to our stores and clubs. Every driver averages around 100,000 miles per year - that's like traveling the world four times!

Together with our truck drivers, we continually strive to ensure that we move merchandise in a responsible and sustainable manner. Drivers follow the most efficient route to their destination and work to minimize the number of "empty miles" they drive. In this way, we use less fuel, we drive fewer miles and we maximize the merchandise we provide while minimizing our environmental impact.

By reducing mobilized "empty miles" and other optimization techniques, Walmart logistics transports more than 161 million cases while only adding miles to 24 million, compared to last year. We increased the efficiency of our truck fleet by 87.4% in 2014 compared to 2005. Learn more about our sustainability efforts.
